『電車男』『告白』『悪人』『モテキ』『おおかみこどもの雨と雪』『君の名は。』『怒り』『竜とそばかすの姫』『すずめの戸締まり』『怪物』などの映画を製作。2010年、米The Hollywood Reporter誌の「Next Generation Asia」に選出され、翌2011年には優れた映画製作者に贈られる「藤本賞」を史上最年少で受賞。 2012年に初小説『世界から猫が消えたなら』を発表した。同作は世界28カ国で出版され、累計200万部を突破。

2013年に発表した絵本『ティニー ふうせんいぬのものがたり』はNHKでアニメ化された。翌年発表した絵本『ムーム』はアニメ映画化され、全世界で32の国際映画賞を受賞した。
2014年、宮崎駿、坂本龍一ら12人との仕事の対話集『仕事。』を発表し大きな反響を呼ぶ。同年発表された小説第2作『億男』は世界累計80万部を超えるベストセラーとなった。

2016年に企画・プロデュースした映画『君の名は。』は、全世界の興行収入が400億円を超え、ロサンゼルス映画批評家協会賞、シッチェスカタロニア映画祭・最優秀長編作品賞を受賞。その後、J・J・エイブラムスのプロデュースでのハリウッド映画化が決定し、当プロジェクトに川村元気が日本人プロデューサーとして参加することが発表された。

2018年、初監督作品『どちらを (英題 : Duality)』がカンヌ国際映画祭 短編コンペティション部門に出品された。加えて企画・製作した『未来のミライ』がカンヌ国際映画祭監督週間に選出され、その後アニー賞長編インディペンデント作品賞を受賞、米アカデミー賞長編アニメ映画賞にもノミネートされた。同年、『映画ドラえもん のび太の宝島』の脚本を担当し、興行収入53億円のヒットとなる。

2021年、英米でミリオンセラーとなった『ぼく モグラ キツネ 馬』で初の翻訳を務め、24万部を超えるベストセラーとなった。その他の著作として小説『四月になれば彼女は』『神曲』、近藤麻理恵との共著『おしゃべりな部屋』、対話集『理系。』『ブレスト』など。いずれもが欧米やアジア各国で出版されている。

2022年、自身の小説を原作として、脚本・監督を務めた映画『百花』が第70回サン・セバスティアン国際映画祭にて、日本人初となる最優秀監督賞を受賞。同年公開された企画・プロデュース作『すずめの戸締まり』は全世界興行収入が415億を超え、日本映画としての海外興行収入の最高記録となった。

2023年、是枝裕和と共同で企画・製作したNetflixシリーズ『舞妓さんちのまかないさん』が全世界で配信された。同年、企画・プロデュースを務めた『怪物』（是枝裕和監督・坂元裕二脚本・坂本龍一音楽）が第76回カンヌ国際映画祭にて、最優秀脚本賞とクィア・パルム賞を受賞した。

In 2010, The Hollywood Reporter selected him for Next Generation Asia. In the following year, he became the youngest recipient in history of the Fujimoto Award, which is given to the best film producer of the year. Kawamura published his first novel If Cats Disappeared From The World in 2012, which has been published in 28 countries and has sold more than 2 million copies.

In 2013, his first released children’s picture book Tinny & The Balloon was made into a television series at NHK, then published the following year, his another picture book MOOM was made into an animation film and won a total of 32 international awards from film festivals worldwide.
In 2014, he garnered attention for his collection of interviews called Profession which featured 12 leading Japanese creators including animator Hayao Miyazaki and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. That same year, he published his second novel, Million Dollar Man which sold over 800 thousand copies.

Released in 2016, your name. was a global hit grossing over 40 billion yen, winning Best Animated Film from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Best Animated Film Award from Sitges Film Festival. It was then announced that the film would be adapted into a Hollywood film produced by J.J. Abrams, and that Genki Kawamura would join the project as a Japanese producer.

In 2018, his directorial debut in short film, Duality, was selected for Short Film In Competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
Also, his planned and produced film Mirai premiered at Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival and won the Annie Award® for Best Animated Independent Feature, was then nominated for the Best Animated Feature category for the Academy Awards®. Furthermore, he wrote the screenplay for the animated film Doraemon: Nobita’s Treasure Island, the blockbuster, which garnered 5.3 billion yen at the box office.

His first work of translation was on the U.S and U.K. bestseller The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse, published in 2021, the book sold over 240 thousand copies in Japan. His other works include novels April Come She Will, God Song, co-authored book with Marie Kondo Chatty Rooms, collection of interviews entitled Rikei and essays called Brainstorming Sessions. All works are translated in multiple languages around the world.

His directorial debut A Hundred Flowers, story featured from his originally written novel, was selected for the Competition section at the 70th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, and became the first Japanese to receive the Silver Shell for Best Director Award. Further, Suzume, an animation film he planned and produced, was released in the same year and grossed over 41.5 billion dollars worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film ever at the international box office.

In 2023, the Netflix series The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, which he conceived and produced with Hirokazu Kore-eda, was distributed worldwide. In the same year, Monster (directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, script by Yuji Sakamoto, music by Ryuichi Sakamoto), which he planned and produced, won the Best Screenplay and Queer Palme awards at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival.
